Public engagement overview
On behalf of the Government of Yukon, YWCHSB conducted several public engagements with Yukoners over the past few years about proposed changes to the Workers’ Compensation Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
Throughout these engagements, we offered ways for members of the public and stakeholders to contribute to the development of legislation that meets the needs of Yukon’s workers and employers.
Modernization of the Workers’ Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act
We carried out a public engagement in 2019–2020 to hear from stakeholders and the public about modernizing and amalgamating the Workers’ Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act into the newly formed Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act.
The Government of Yukon approved these changes in December 2021 and the new Act will come into force in July 2022.
We have summarized the information we received in a What We Heard report, which is available in English and in French.
Changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
Public engagement on changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations took place in 2019. The Government of Yukon approved these changes in 2020. A new Violence and Harassment Prevention Regulation, as well as enhancements to the existing Regulations for hazard assessment, came into force on September 4, 2021.
We have summarized the information received in a What We Heard report, which is available in English and in French.

Proposed PTSD presumption amendment and changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act
In June 2017, the Government of Yukon asked us to consult with Yukoners to explore the possibility of adding other occupations to the PTSD presumption and include those changes in the Workers’ Compensation Act. The government also wanted to know if Yukoners supported amending the Occupational Health and Safety Act to provide for regulations aimed at preventing work-related mental injuries.
The What We Heard report summarizes the findings of this public engagement.
The Government of Yukon amended the Workers’ Compensation Act in the fall of 2017 to include a presumption for PTSD for emergency response workers.
