About WHMIS 2015

WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It’s a method of providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials in workplaces.

In 2015, following collaboration at the federal, provincial and territorial levels, the old WHMIS 1988 rules were updated to match new rules recently adopted around the world. Read Yukon’s new WHMIS Regulations.

What's changing?

The new system is clearer. It will improve safety and simplify cross-border trade.

What's staying the same?

Responsibilities for workers, employers and suppliers remain the same under the system.

Worker Responsibilities

  • Participate in WHMIS education and site-specific training.
  • Protect themselves and their coworkers.
  • Identify and control hazards.

Employer Responsibilities

Supplier Responsibilities

Will new education and training be needed?

Yes, specific training is needed for anyone using chemicals on the worksite.

Education about WHMIS is needed when chemicals bearing the WHMIS 2015 labels enter the workplace, or whenever new hazard information is available.
