Current Average Assessment Rate

The average assessment rate for 2017 is $1.87.

The current average assessment rates over the past few years have been:

  • $1.85 in 2016
  • $1.90 in 2015
  • $2.18 in 2014
  • $2.34 in 2013

The average assessment rate is not paid by any employer. It represents average assessment of all industry groups rolled into one number.

It is possible for the average assessment rate to be declining, but for the assessment rate of a particular industry to rise in a given year if it posted a nasty safety performance record over the previous several years.

Similarly, the assessment rate of a particular industry group could fall if their claims costs were stable or were trending down over previous years.

The average assessment rate is simply an annual marker used to show trends in the compensation system.

If the average assessment rate is stable or dropping, then it suggests factors affecting the cost of running the entire system – claims, administration, investments – have improved or remained the same.

If the average assessment rate climbs, it suggests costs are increasing.
