If a worker calls in sick because of flu-like symptoms, should I require them to be tested to see if they have H1N1?
No. The Medical Officer of Health is not recommending that people be tested for H1N1 (although health care providers may want testing in specific cases).
When H1N1 first began, it was important for medical authorities to be able to track it, and so they encouraged testing.
At this point, H1N1 is really just another form of flu, and nothing is to be gained by sick people in going to get tested, nor does it make any real difference to their co-workers.
People with flu-like symptoms should stay home, call 811 if they have questions about symptoms or treatment, and not return to work until they have been without symptoms for at least 24 hours.
